WayV have typically launched the strongest music throughout the NCT universe, together with standout singles like Flip Again Time, Take Off and Moonwalk. However, we haven’t had a correct WayV comeback in almost two years. Throughout that point, members have launched solos and sub-units alongside their participation in bigger NCT tasks. New single Phantom picks up the place the group left off, although its dramatic prospers would profit from a extra compelling set of melodies.
In some ways, Phantom is a traditional SM boy group observe. Its strategy feels angular and even militant at instances, anchored by a bombastic refrain with layered vocals and theatrical prospers buttressing the instrumental. You can throw this music on any EXO album with out situation. It’s darkish and classy and carried out effectively. Nevertheless, there are two main parts that stop me from completely loving this.
First off is the beat, which plods alongside with none actual chew. Evaluate Phantom to EXO’s Mama – a music with related tempo and power. Mama’s percussion slams with scrumptious depth. In the meantime, Phantom’s manufacturing feels extra canned and reigned in. In relation to mid-tempo manufacturing like this, the beat wants actual kick to face out. Equally, Phantom’s melodies lack that further little bit of depth. The refrain – easy as it’s – improves with additional listens. However, the melodies surrounding it (together with a ton of muted grumble-talk) don’t quantity to a lot. They’re nice sufficient — simply not very memorable or ear-catching. For a long-awaited comeback, I needed a bit extra. Fortunately, WayV promote the music’s charms with their always-polished efficiency. They continue to be an underutilized gem in SM Leisure’s roster.
